How to safely power wash your Bucks County deck
A power washer can bring a dull, slippery deck back to life, or it can damage the boards. Here is how to tell when your deck needs cleaning and how to do it safely.
Why cleaning your deck matters
Part of owning a deck is keeping it in good shape over the years. Even a well-built deck collects dirt, mildew and discoloration, and in Bucks County our seasonal humidity and falling leaves speed that up.
Keeping the surface clean is not just about looks. Buildup holds moisture against the wood, and that moisture feeds mold and slowly breaks the boards down. Regular cleaning protects the health of the deck and keeps it safe to walk on.
Signs your deck needs a wash
If you notice any of these, a thorough cleaning can prevent long-term damage and bring back the deck’s natural finish.
- Green or black streaks. These form in shaded or damp areas and mean mold, algae or mildew is growing. Left alone, they discolor the wood and make it slippery.
- A slick surface after rain. Algae and compacted grime make a deck slippery, which is a real hazard for children and older adults.
- Gray or faded wood. Sun and moisture strip away the wood’s natural oils and leave it dull. Washing removes the weathered surface layer and prepares the wood for sealing or staining.
- Dirt packed between boards. Pollen, leaves and debris trapped in the gaps hold moisture, encourage mold and can lead to rot.
- Stains from leaves, rust or spills. Fallen leaves, metal furniture and food or drink can leave marks that ordinary cleaning will not lift.
- A musty smell or soft spots. These can signal hidden moisture damage. Cleaning removes the surface contaminants so the wood can be inspected for deeper repairs.
Power washing safely
A power washer is an effective tool, but it has to be used carefully. Used the wrong way, it can seriously damage the wood, or hurt you. These are the principles we follow on every deck we clean.
Match the equipment to the deck
Power washers come with different levels of power and need different cleaning solutions to work properly. Wood, composite and PVC decking each call for their own pressure setting and cleanser. Choosing the right equipment for your deck is the first step to cleaning it without harm.
Use calibrated pressure, not maximum pressure
More pressure is not better. Our crews set the pressure to suit your decking material, so the wash removes grime, mold and embedded debris without damaging the surface underneath.
Keep people and property safe
Power washers can be dangerous when used improperly. Protect yourself, your family and your neighbors by keeping everyone clear of the work area. Our team has extensive experience doing this job safely.
Look for deeper problems
Washing removes surface mold, mildew and algae. If you find soft or rotted spots once the deck is clean, it may need more than a wash. Our deck repair services can take care of it.
When to wash, and what to do afterward
Most decks benefit from a power wash once a year, and shaded or high-traffic decks may need it more often. Timing it with the seasons gets the most out of it. In spring, a wash clears away winter residue and prepares the surface for sealing or staining. In fall, it removes leaves and pollen that would otherwise trap moisture through the winter.
If your deck is wood and has not been sealed recently, plan to seal or stain it after washing. Power washing opens the pores of the wood, which makes it the right time to apply a protective finish against moisture and sun. Our guide to Bucks County deck refinishing explains when a full refinish makes sense.
Washing can improve a deck’s color a great deal by removing dirt, weathering and stains. For full color restoration, pair it with a new stain or sealant.
