A guide to Bucks County deck refinishing

When your deck’s color has dulled and the finish has started to fail, refinishing can bring it back to like-new condition. Here is how to know when it is time.

Bring back that new-deck feeling

There is nothing like the look, feel and smell of a new deck. The fresh wood promises long summer days outside, and it makes the whole back of the house look better.

Time and weather take their toll, though. In Bucks County, seasonal extremes fade the color, wear down the finish and leave the wood exposed. When you notice your deck’s color has started to dull, it is time to think about refinishing.

Why refinish instead of replace

You keep the deck you have

Refinishing restores the freshness of your backyard retreat without tearing out a deck that is still structurally sound.

It is quicker than building new

A refinish is a far smaller project than a new deck, so you are back to enjoying the space sooner.

It catches hidden damage

Weather can start structural damage without you knowing. During a professional refinish, we assess your deck’s structural integrity so problems are caught early.

It looks like new again

Once stains, rough patches and blemishes are removed and a fresh finish goes on, your deck looks and feels renewed.

Signs your deck is ready for refinishing

If you notice two or more of these signs, it is time to schedule a refinish. Acting early restores the deck’s looks, extends its life and prevents deeper damage.

  • Gray, faded or blotchy wood. Sun and moisture strip away the wood’s color and finish. This is often the first visible sign that the protective coating has broken down.
  • Water no longer beads on the surface. When water soaks in instead of beading up, the sealant has failed and the deck is open to rot and swelling.
  • Splinters or rough patches. Surface fibers lift and fray in high-traffic areas, which is uncomfortable and unsafe for children, pets and bare feet.
  • Loose nails or screws. Fasteners shift as the wood expands and contracts, which can leave boards unstable.
  • Peeling or flaking stain. Once the protective layer starts to fail, the wood deteriorates quickly.
  • Mildew or algae in shaded areas. Organic growth makes the surface slippery and shows the wood is not properly sealed.
  • Soft spots or sagging boards. These can point to rot or insect damage underneath, which needs attention before any refinish.

How professional refinishing works

A good finish depends on the preparation. Every refinish starts with a professional pressure wash that removes dirt, mildew and old coatings so the new finish bonds properly.

Next comes repair. Minor issues such as splinters, nail pops and shallow cracks can be dealt with as part of the refinish. Warped or rotted boards need replacing first, and if structural repairs are needed, we handle any permitting they require.

Then the finish goes on. We offer transparent, semi-transparent and solid stains and sealants. Each gives a different level of color, water resistance and protection from the sun, and we will help you choose the one that suits your deck and the look you want. We will also tell you how long to wait before putting furniture back and using the deck, based on the product and the weather.

How often to refinish

It is best to refinish once every few years, rather than waiting until the deck becomes an eyesore. The right interval depends on how much sun and moisture your deck gets and how heavily it is used. Waiting too long between refinishes increases the risk of serious weather damage.

Spring is a good time to refinish, after winter and before the busy outdoor season. Fall works too, to protect the wood before the cold arrives. If your deck also needs a clean, read how to safely power wash your deck.
